HACKATHON 2020
Come join us at this year's Hackathon on Socially Responsible Technology!
Thursday, April 16th, 11 am-3pm
King Library (Room 213).
From 11 am to 12 noon, we will hold an open panel discussion followed by Q&A with the audience. Our invited guest speakers include academics, artists, authors, and hackers who work at the intersection of the humanities/arts and technology and use visual storytelling, data visualization, and network analysis to excavate hidden histories or geographies.
We hope to see you there!
about The Hackathon
“Deep Humanities for Socially Responsible Technology” is a one-day themed hackathon aimed at infusing humanistic inquiry, ethical reasoning, and artistic practice into technology. Students and faculty from SJSU's Colleges of H&A, Engineering, and Science will exchange ideas, tools, and solutions with invited Silicon Valley artists, academics, authors, and hackers in order to develop socially responsible approaches to digital cultural mapping and multimodal design. This event advances the goal of SJSU's Deep Humanities & Arts Initiative.
The hackathon will begin with a moderated open panel discussion and interactive Q&A with the audience. Panelists will discuss innovative methods in cultural mapping and multimodal design such as visualization and framing strategies, narrative story-telling techniques, semiotic discourse analysis, ethical case studies and other creative ideas.
Next, during the closed interactive panel discussion, faculty experts will demo or describe specific tools/technologies while engaging in Q&A with participating student teams.
During the closed hands-on hacking session that follows, student teams will work under the guidance of trained faculty to build prototypes of cultural mapping and multimodal design projects using various humanistic and artistic approaches.
The hackathon will conclude with student presentations and awards. Prize-winning projects from the hackathon will be adapted and integrated into the new curriculum for English 1B: a unique first-year composition class being developed for STEM majors.
